Questions to Ask Before You Join A Direct Sales Company

by Leah Day

Joining a direct sales company is exciting and invigorating! You're about to embark on a brand new venture!

But before you jump in with both feet and your checkbook, make sure to ask yourself and your sponsor a few questions.

1. How much does it cost to join?

This is really a no-brainer question. Typically it costs anywhere from $100 - $500 to join a direct sales company and this includes the cost of your starting kit, training materials, promotional materials, and products that will get you started in the business.

While your starting kit will get you started, make sure to ask your sponsor if she recommends picking up any additional items. Make sure to watch cost of these additional items so you're always keeping an eye on your business expenses. When in doubt, wait to purchase that extra display lotion and you may be able to earn it with your company's quick start bonuses.

2. Do you have to pay an annual renewal fee?

This is a very good question to ask right from the very beginning so you don't get surprised later. Renewal fees range from $30 - $500 in some companies! These fees go to maintaining your free website, customer service, and company wide training programs.

Even if the renewal fee for your prospective company is high, keep in mind that this is nothing compared to the cost of opening a store front business. By starting a business with direct sales, you're still able to be your own boss and make your own hours, but not subject to the huge investments that most business owners must accumulate before they can even open their doors.

3. Do you have to buy products every month?

Some direct sales companies require you to purchase a set amount in products each month in order to maintain your status as a Consultant. While this may be helpful in the beginning, you may quickly find your house overflowing with extra products!

This is definitely an important question because it can add unneeded expense to your business. If you don't need products, you shouldn't have to buy them!

4. How does the direct sales company ship the products?

Some companies ship products directly to customers while other companies still ship only to hostesses or Consultants. In this situation either you or your hostess will receive the products and then be responsible for delivering them to each customer.

While this should not be a deal breaker by any means, it's good to know from the start that you will be spending time and energy delivering products to your customers.

5. What is the training like?

So far, all the questions we've talked about have been about money. Now let's talk about training!

You probably weren't born knowing exactly how to run a successful direct sales business, so you're going to have to learn. It takes time to learn and patience, but you also need support and personal mentoring from your sponsor.

With more experience in the business, it's good to start developing a relationship of trust with your sponsor from the very beginning. Aside from personal mentoring with your sponsor, does your company provide weekly or monthly training calls? How much information do you get about your products and how they work?

It's good to have the understanding that you're not going to get ALL the answers you need from just your company. You will have to branch out and be willing to learn and grow within yourself for your business to flourish.

That being said, you still want to be sure that you have a support system in place that will be there for you when you need it. Make sure you definitely have one from the very beginning!
